"Keep with next" will keep two consecutive paragraphs together and not separated by a page break. "Keep lines together" will prevent Word from adding page breaks in the middle of a paragraph.

Now you can view the two instances side by side, which is almost the same as a vertical split. The Side to Side option reduces the size of the pages, but slides pages over, similar to a book.
