As of September 2020, C++ is the fourth most popular programming language globally behind C, Java and Python, and – according to the latest TIOBE index – is also the fastest growing.

C++ is "doing very well", Tiobe CEO Paul Jansen, says in the company's September 2020 index for the world's most popular programming languages. C++ currently ranks fourth, behind C, Java, and Python.

It is standardized by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the latest version of which is C++20, finalized in December 2020. The next standard is likely to be called C++2023.

C++ is widely considered the most fundamental of programming languages and requires students to learn about how computers store data and interpret code in order to create functional programs.

C++ overtook C in the top three of the TIOBE Programming Language Community Index this month, a significant shakeup following gradual growth of C++ and gradual decline of C over the last year.
