Carakan (pronounced Tsharakan) is now 2.5 times faster than Futhark, the JavaScript engine in the Opera 10 browser. It could be even faster when ready, the company said.

Octane was developed for and by the developers of V8, the JavaScript engine used in Chrome. It was intended to address flaws in the earlier SunSpider benchmark, developed by Apple's Safari team.

Eligible browser JavaScript engines include JavaScriptCore (Safari), V8 (Chrome, Edge), and Spidermonkey (Firefox), but security researchers can pitch other engines in their submitted proposals.
