NEW YORK (AP) — New York City is using ranked choice voting in its Democratic mayoral primary election, a system that takes some explaining, even for people who have used it before.

Supporters of the system say ranked choice voting builds consensus, promotes positive campaigning and lets voters express a fuller range of opinions.

The candidates for mayor in the nation’s largest city are, arguably, as diverse as the residents they seek to represent.
